‘Flash for i’ and ‘Control for i’ give you extra time:

to do daily backups
=> is it possible to perform daily backups with nearly no production interruption?
Yes! Just around 1 minute is needed… then your users can again access to their application !!!
to perform Save21
=> Save21 is a System backup needing to be in restricted mode to be made! No users at all during many hours 🙂

to refresh test environments
=> your Dev team wants to refresh frequently their Test/Acceptance/Preprod environments… but you cannot so easily !
Again: just 1 minute to clone your Prod Database and Applications and then just the IPL time => your UAT partition is on line with all the system and app values needed !
to recover from data-loss, data-corruption or crypto-virus
=> a bug spoils all your database, an absent minded deletes tables, a hacker or malware destroys your data or corrupt your IFS :-(((

How it works

Flash for i
=> will manage from the IBM i LPAR the SnapShot feature (also called FlashCopy) of your external storage, to do “instant copies” (some microseconds) of all your IBM i production disks !!!
=> before the SnapShot, ‘Flash for i’ will perform a flush (=”quiesce”) of active Data in Memory to the external disks = some seconds to one minute (rarely more) !!
=> then ‘Flash for i’ will start a ‘clone’ LPAR using the ‘cloned’ disks, changing only 5 system parameters to make this partition inoffensive (with a different IP, without any batch or autojob activity, etc …)
=> finally ‘Flash for i’ will request to the ‘clone’ LPAR to do what is planned :
– Backup : User backup, BRMS backup, Save21, …
– Reconfiguration of the LPAR for activities such as: Queries, SQL requests, Analytics, ETL, … or Test, Acceptance, Pre-prod, … or Validation, Recovery, …
=> Last but not least, ‘Flash for i’ can perform every day 1, 2, 12, 24 SnapShots only to keep on your disks regular “RECOVERY COPIES” (note: 1 copy needs generally only 5% of used disk space) . Of course ‘Flash for i’ manages the IBM ‘SafeGuarded Copy’ feature and will be able to start these recovery copies for Tests or for Real recovery situations!
=> ‘Flash for i’ provides many messages, logs, reports and dashboards to ease administration and has options to secure and centralize operations.
